Crete placed under Red Code due to extreme storm and flood risk

Crete has been placed under Red Code status by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection due to extreme weather conditions expected to last until Sunday, October 4, 2026. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency bulletin warning of heavy rainfall, intense storms, and a high risk of flash flooding, particularly in the northern and northwestern regions of the island.

In Rethymno, the meteorological station in Anogeia recorded 361.4 mm of rainfall. The severe weather has already resulted in the death of a livestock breeder in the Rethymno area. To ensure public safety, the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, has prohibited access to gorges, hiking trails, and high-risk terrain. Additionally, schools in the Rethymno and Chania prefectures have been closed as a precautionary measure.

In addition to heavy precipitation, the Aegean Sea is expected to experience gale-force winds reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort. The National Civil Protection mechanism is fully mobilized, with emergency services and local authorities on high alert to manage potential disasters and facilitate rapid recovery efforts.
