Crete receives four awards for cultural and educational innovation

The Crete Region has received four awards at the Education Leaders Awards 2026 for its project, ‘Living Tradition and Cultural Innovation in Crete’. This initiative is a multidisciplinary collaboration involving the Theological School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the LOOX Research, Innovation and Culture Organization, the Toplou and Koudouma Monasteries, and the Crete Region.

The project earned two Gold Awards in ‘Innovative Educational Programs’ and ‘Lifelong Learning through Digital and Hybrid Models’, alongside two Silver Awards for ‘Original Research Project’ and ‘Collaboration with Business and Community’.

The initiative operates through two main pillars: the ‘Iconography 2.0’ program at Toplou Monastery and the ‘Asterousia Polis’ at Koudouma Monastery. These programs integrate Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition with modern art, research, and digital technologies. At Toplou Monastery, the historic site serves as a digital laboratory using artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and 3D scanning to highlight monumental iconography. At Koudouma Monastery, the program functions as a summer school and arts workshop focusing on ecotheology, cultural heritage preservation, and social care.
