Crete regional updates: Chania governance, protests, and environmental decisions
Various administrative and environmental developments are occurring across Crete. In Chania, Michalis Kalogridakis, Deputy Mayor of Technical Services, addressed the challenges of local governance, noting that Greek municipalities often lack the autonomy and funding seen in other European regions. He specifically highlighted the pressures of ‘overtourism’ and the impact of large-scale hotel investments on local infrastructure and housing.
In educational news, the ELME Chania teachers' union and university students organized a protest that disrupted a scheduled visit by the Minister of Education to the Kounoupidia Gymnasium. The union criticized the ministry's policies and announced a potential work stoppage should the Minister attempt an unannounced visit.
Regarding public safety, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued warnings for extreme weather, including heavy rains, storms, and potential hail, advising citizens to secure objects and avoid certain outdoor activities.
Finally, the Environment Committee of the Region of Crete has provided conditional approval for the expansion of the Chordaki quarry in the Chania municipality. Other decisions included approvals for biogas and sewage treatment projects in Heraklion, while a sewage project in Lassithi was rejected due to siting issues.
