Crete Senesi wind project faces opposition from UNESCO Club
The Club per l'Unesco di Siena and local citizen committees are calling on the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security to reject a proposed wind power project in Asciano. The plan involves installing ten wind turbines, each 200 meters tall, within the Crete Senesi region.
Opponents argue the project will cause significant visual and environmental damage to a landscape recognized internationally for its historical and cultural value. Concerns include the impact on neighboring UNESCO sites, such as Siena and Val d'Orcia, as well as potential disruptions to local tourism, cycling routes, and the regional economy.
Technical objections highlight the scale of the structures, noting they would be more than twice the height of the Torre del Mangia. Additionally, critics pointed to the environmental impact of the construction phase, including heavy vehicle traffic on the Lauretana road and extensive earthworks. The project has also been criticized for its proximity to the historic church of San Florenzo a Vescona, a nationally registered heritage site.
