Crete to build new Kastelli airport for 15 million passengers

A new airport is currently under construction in Kastelli, located southeast of Heraklion, to accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting Crete. The facility is designed to replace the aging Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklion and work alongside Chania Airport to manage high passenger volumes.

The new airport is expected to have a capacity for over 15 million passengers annually. The terminal will span 93,000 square meters across eight levels and feature 19 runways, eight of which will serve flights both within and outside the Schengen Area. The infrastructure is being built to support current aircraft models as well as larger, next-generation planes.
