Crete tourism faces high satisfaction and infrastructure pressure

Crete is experiencing a complex tourism landscape characterized by high visitor satisfaction in specific sectors but growing concerns regarding infrastructure capacity. According to the ‘Greece Reputation Tracker’ for the second quarter of 2026, released by INSETE, Crete achieved an overall satisfaction score of 9.1 out of 10. The island’s strongest asset is its gastronomy, which earned a 9.4 rating, surpassing the national average. However, ratings for culture (8.9) and sea-related experiences (8.8) remain below the Greek national averages of 9.2 and 9.1, respectively.

Parallel to these high satisfaction levels, the island faces significant pressure from record-breaking visitor numbers. In the first eleven months of 2025, Crete recorded over 6.3 million international airline arrivals, with Heraklion airport alone exceeding 4 million. Total passenger traffic across Heraklion, Chania, and Sitia airports reached approximately 14.2 million in 2025. This surge has sparked debates regarding overtourism, as the influx of visitors places heavy strain on local infrastructure, including water supplies, electricity, waste management, traffic congestion, and historical centers.
