Crete tourism season extends through October with high demand
The tourism season in Crete is experiencing a significant extension, with high demand and hotel occupancy rates expected to remain strong through late October. Market indicators suggest September is performing similarly to peak August levels, supported by favorable weather conditions and approximately 1.67 million scheduled international flight seats for the September-October period.
Giorgos Sfakianakis, President of the Association of Hotel Managers of Crete, noted that while the peak intensity may subside after October 20, about one-third of hotel units are expected to remain open until mid-November. The current market is characterized by last-minute bookings—defined as those made two to three weeks in advance—and significant discounts, with some packages offering up to 40% off peak prices.
This trend follows a robust seven-month period during which Crete welcomed over 4 million passengers via domestic and international flights. Additionally, separate labor market trends indicate a ‘September Surge’ in job postings as companies prepare for year-end closures, though this is a broader economic observation.
