Crete Valley project partners meet in Crete to advance energy transition
Partners from 13 European countries gathered in Crete to discuss the implementation and progress of the Crete Valley project, an initiative focused on energy transition and renewable energy solutions.
The project features several pilot applications. In Arvi, an integrated system combining cooling, district heating, and community photovoltaic systems is being developed to fully meet the energy needs of 20 households. In ArkaloChori, a central district heating unit utilizing biomass is in the final stages of construction and is expected to be operational by the winter of 2027, initially serving at least 70 households and a municipal swimming pool.
Operating on a circular economy model, the project utilizes olive tree pruning residues for biofuel production and organic waste to generate biogas, heat, and electricity. These processes also return byproducts to agricultural production as soil improvers.
