Crete village of Fichti saved by firefighters and volunteers during wildfire

A wildfire swept through the village of Fichti on the island of Crete, Greece, on 31 July. Strong winds drove the flames across olive groves, fields and homes, threatening the community.

Firefighters, supported by local volunteers, managed to contain the fire and prevent any loss of life in the village. Their efforts protected houses and limited damage, though olive trees, crops and the area's biodiversity suffered significant loss. The incident coincided with a broader wave of large fires across Greece, which has already claimed three firefighters on other fronts.

Local authorities, including the Municipality of Argos‑Mykines, coordinated evacuations, provided shelter for displaced residents and assisted in the emergency response. Community members expressed deep gratitude toward the emergency services and volunteers for their collective solidarity.
