Crete weather victims to receive aid within 10 days

Evangelos Tournas, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced that the first round of financial aid for those affected by the recent severe weather in Crete will be distributed within ten days, provided that documentation is complete. The funds will be sent to mayors to compensate residents for household appliance damages. Additionally, funds for affected businesses are expected to be allocated within fifteen days.

Damage assessments by the DAEFK are currently underway for both homes and businesses, with recording expected to conclude next week. The Minister noted that Greece is simultaneously managing diverse natural risks, citing fires in the north and flooding in the south as evidence of ongoing climate change.

Regarding the wildfire season, Tournas reported a significant decrease in burned areas and fires compared to previous periods. However, he emphasized that the anti-fire period remains active and Civil Protection remains on high operational alert, citing recent large-scale mobilizations to control forest fires in the Evros region.
