Crete wildfire: Father of fallen firefighter calls for state reforms
Father Emmanouil Diamanakis has shared a personal account following the death of his son, Pantelis Diamanakis, a firefighter who lost his life while battling major wildfires in Rethymno, Crete.
Speaking on the loss, the priest described the profound grief of the event while emphasizing the importance of faith. Beyond his personal mourning, he issued a direct appeal to the Greek state, calling for improved training, organization, equipment, and substantive protection for firefighting personnel. He stressed that official well-wishes must be followed by responsibility, investigation, and structural changes to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.
