Wildfires in Sitia and Blue Flag awards in Attica
In Sitia, Crete, a wildfire broke out on Friday evening in the Achladia area, affecting a zone with low vegetation near a wind farm. Following an overnight battle by the Fire Service, including 40 firefighters, two specialized forest units (EMODE), and various local water tankers, the fire has been contained. While no active front remains, emergency services remain on high alert to prevent rekindling. This incident marks the third fire in the Sitia region within 48 hours, following previous outbreaks in Karydi and Kato Zakro.
Separately, 17 beaches in the Attica region have been awarded the Blue Flag for 2026, meeting international criteria for water quality, safety, and organization. These include locations such as Sounio, Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, and Lagonissi. Greece maintains a strong position in the international rankings, holding the 2nd place among 51 participating countries, contributing approximately 14% of the world's Blue Flag beaches.
