Originally built in 1806 as part of a defensive system to protect the Venetian Lagoon during Napoleonic rule, the military redoubt was later expanded under Austrian rule. The island became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866 and maintained its military function until after World War I before transitioning to private residential use.
