CRFM proposes digital fisheries collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean

Dr. Marc Williams, Executive Director of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), has proposed a cooperation programme between Africa and the Caribbean focused on digital fisheries and the blue economy. Speaking at a workshop in Tangier, Morocco, organized by the Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation among African States Bordering the Atlantic (ATLAFCO/COMHAFAT), Williams emphasized the need for affordable digital tools, stronger institutions, and active participation from fisherfolk.

The proposal aims to address global challenges such as climate pressures, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and limited surveillance resources. Key areas for potential dialogue include digital fisheries information systems, fleet monitoring, electronic reporting, and digital traceability. Williams noted that enhanced vessel information and seafood traceability can support responsible fishing, coastal livelihoods, and food security.

The proposed CRFM–ATLAFCO cooperation programme is currently offered for discussion and does not represent a formal commitment of resources. Its eventual scope would depend on the interests and institutional capacities of the participating countries.
