Criciúma cancels major events due to Super El Niño warnings

The city of Criciúma, located in southern Santa Catarina, has canceled major musical performances scheduled for November during its 101st anniversary celebrations. Mayor Vagner Espíndola announced the decision due to warnings of a ‘Super El Niño’ phenomenon, which is expected to bring above-average rainfall to the region.

By canceling these events, the municipal government aims to keep emergency teams, machinery, and infrastructure available for potential climate-related responses. Additionally, the city has issued a decree declaring a State of Climate Risk for the next six months. This measure establishes a Municipal Committee for Prevention, Mitigation, and Preparation to monitor meteorological and geological forecasts and map vulnerable areas.
