Criciúma sends three homeless individuals to involuntary treatment

The municipality of Criciúma carried out an integrated operation, supported by the Military Police, to place three people experiencing severe chemical dependence into involuntary hospitalization. The action was coordinated by the city’s Health and Social Assistance secretariats and announced by Mayor Vagner Espindola, who said the goal is to provide specialized care, protect the community and help the individuals rebuild their lives.

According to Social Assistance Secretary Dudi Sônego, the process begins with outreach, listening and voluntary treatment offers; involuntary admission is used only when medical assessment shows that other options are insufficient. The law requires a medical report to justify the measure, after which a multidisciplinary team provides detoxification, clinical stabilization and an individualized therapeutic plan, while the municipal network continues to support social reintegration.

The intervention aims to break cycles of suffering, ensure health protection and create conditions for the patients to regain autonomy.
