Cricket Australia clears pathway for transgender player Anaya Bangar

Cricket Australia has established a pathway for transgender player Anaya Bangar to pursue elite women’s cricket starting in March 2027. The decision provides a competitive route for the 25-year-old, who previously faced limited options following the International Cricket Council (ICC) ban on players who have undergone male puberty.

Bangar, the daughter of former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, intends to progress from Premier Cricket to elite domestic levels and potentially the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). She has stated her intention to provide medical data and evidence to address concerns regarding competitive advantage.

The ruling highlights a divergence in governance: Cricket Australia utilizes a testosterone-based framework for domestic competition, whereas the ICC maintains stricter regulations for international play. The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with former Canadian international player Danielle McGahey offering support, while South African player Marizanne Kapp expressed concerns regarding fairness in women’s sports.
