Cricket Australia defends Big Bash League privatisation plans

Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird is defending plans to privatise Big Bash League (BBL) franchises to attract external investment. The move aims to grow television audiences, media rights, and match attendances.

To remain competitive against emerging leagues in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, the salary pool for BBL squads has been increased from $1.9 million to over $3 million. Proponents argue that the commercial success of T20 cricket provides the necessary financial engine to support and reinforce the traditional Test cricket format.
