Cricket frog locomotion study offers insights for robotics
Researchers are studying the unique locomotion of the cricket frog, a species native to Virginia and North Carolina, to better understand how it skips across water surfaces. Led by Professor Jake Socha, the research team aims to provide a more precise scientific definition for this ‘skipping’ behavior, which has been colloquially referred to as ‘skating’ in literature since 1949.
The findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology with Talia Weiss as the lead author, suggest that the frog's ability to move across water without sinking may involve highly specialized anatomy. This biological study could eventually inform the development of new technologies in robotics and aquatic vessel design.
