Cricketer Aaron Summers jailed for sexual abuse of minor

Former Hobart Hurricanes cricketer Aaron William Summers has been sentenced in the Supreme Court of Tasmania to two and a half years in prison. The sentence includes 10 months of mandatory jail time, after which the remainder will be suspended.

Summers, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of penetrative sexual abuse of a minor and one count of grooming. The court heard that Summers met the victim, who was 15 at the time, at a cricket match in December 2017. Justice Helen Wood noted that Summers used his prominence as a sportsperson to reach the young girl, who was below the age of sexual consent.

This sentencing follows previous legal proceedings in the Northern Territory. In 2021, Summers served three years and 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to possessing and transmitting child abuse material and attempting to procure a person under 16 for sexual activity involving three boys he knew through cricket.
