Crikvenica and Vinodol regions experience earthquake swarm

Residents of the Crikvenica and Vinodol regions in Croatia have experienced a series of seismic events. According to the Seismological Service of the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb, the area is currently experiencing an earthquake swarm.

The activity began following a moderate magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Senj on September 17. Since then, numerous small tremors have been recorded, with magnitudes ranging from below 2.2 to 3.0 on the Richter scale. Recent tremors have had very shallow epicenters, approximately one kilometer deep, near Bribir and Novi Vinodolski.

Dr. Kristina Šariri of the Seismological Service noted that while it is difficult to predict when the activity will subside, the release of accumulated seismic energy through a series of smaller tremors may be preferable to a single larger event. However, seismologists emphasize that current activity cannot be used to predict the exact time, magnitude, or epicenter of future earthquakes. The region remains seismically active, with historical precedents including significant earthquakes in 1916.
