Iran judicial updates: death sentences, pardons, and activist imprisonment

Recent judicial developments in Iran include a death sentence issued by the Tehran Criminal Court Branch 9 for a defendant accused of sexual abuse and extortion. In a separate case, the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of a woman named Shabnam, who was accused of murdering an 82-year-old man in Tehran, ordering a retrial.

Several prisoners have been released following the forgiveness of victims' families. In Qazvin, a death row inmate was released through mediation efforts involving prison rehabilitators and dispute resolution councils. Similarly, in Karaj, a prisoner sentenced to death for a murder occurring six years ago in a park was released after the victim's family withdrew their charges.

In a separate legal matter, the Tehran Appeals Court upheld a five-year prison sentence for social activist and citizen journalist Soheil Arabi. Arabi was convicted of “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against national security,” a charge linked to his social media activity and support for victims of protests. He is also barred from social media-related professional activities for two years.
