Crime Intelligence officials freed as corruption charges are dropped

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has permanently withdrawn all fraud and corruption charges against seven senior Crime Intelligence officials, including Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and Brigadier Dineo Mokwele. The officials appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday, where the case was formally withdrawn.

The decision follows evidence presented to the Madlanga Commission that appeared to undercut the state’s case. Evidence suggested the original arrests, which stemmed from allegations regarding Mokwele’s irregular appointment, may have been part of a plot to remove senior police officials from their positions.

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago stated that after reviewing evidence from the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, the National Director of Public Prosecutions decided to stay the case, noting that new evidence is highly unlikely to emerge.

Speaking outside the court, Brigadier Mokwele expressed relief, stating that a ‘heavy burden’ had been lifted for her and her family. She noted that the experience highlighted the need for an overhaul of the criminal justice system to prevent similar occurrences.
