Crime rates decline in Morelos and San Mateo Atenco

Several regions in Mexico have reported significant decreases in high-impact crimes during 2026. In the state of Morelos, the Mesa Estatal de Construcción de Paz reported a 51% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides between January and August compared to the same period in 2025. Other notable declines in Morelos include a 39.1% drop in robberies against transporters, an 18.7% decrease in vehicle theft, and a 9% reduction in femicides.

In the municipality of San Mateo Atenco, Mayor Ana Aurora Muñiz Neyra announced a 25% reduction in high-impact crimes from January to July 2026. The municipality recorded 372 reports during this period, down from 497 in the first seven months of 2025. Muñiz Neyra attributed this trend to coordinated efforts between municipal, state, and federal authorities, specifically highlighting the use of video surveillance. Additionally, the municipality reported a 39% decrease in incidents related to violence against women.
