Regional crime trends and weather alerts impact Uruguay and Mexico
Various regional reports highlight shifting crime trends and weather-related disruptions in Latin America.
In Uruguay, Interior Minister Carlos Negro confirmed an increase in homicides during the third quarter of the year, though he noted that other crime types continue to decline. Officials expect to release full figures on Monday.
In Mexico, security data shows mixed results. Zacatecas is ranked as the seventh state with the fewest homicides in 2026. In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier reported significant decreases in homicides, kidnappings, and extortion through September. Meanwhile, Toluca has seen a nearly 79% drop in vehicle thefts. Conversely, Coahuila faces a gender violence crisis, with reports of rising feminicides and domestic violence.
Weather alerts have also triggered safety measures. In Puebla, the SEP suspended in-person classes in the North, Northeast, and Black Sierra regions due to heavy rain and potential storms from a cold front. In Guerrero, Governor Evelyn Salgado called for vigilance and suspended classes and administrative work due to the impact of Hurricane Trudy.
