Crime rates fluctuate across Portuguese metropolitan regions

Provisional data from the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) indicates varying crime trends across different Portuguese regions. While general crime has risen nationally, specific metropolitan areas show divergent patterns.

In the Porto Metropolitan Area, general crime increased by 10.9% compared to the same period last year, although violent and serious crime decreased by 8.4%. In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, general crime rose by 2.9%, while violent and serious crimes saw a slight decrease of 0.4%. Crimes detected through police proactivity in Lisbon increased by 7.2%.

In contrast to the national upward trend, the Setúbal District Command reported a decrease in both general crime (-7.4%) and violent and serious crime (-13%). The PSP stated it is monitoring specific phenomena causing social alarm and is directing preventive and reactive policing, including special operations and investigations, to combat these trends.
