Crime Stoppers urges cryptocurrency regulation to track illicit funds

Experts are calling for increased regulation of digital assets to prevent criminal organizations from using cryptocurrency ecosystems to hide illicit gains. Speaking at the Technovation Argentina Forum, Alejo Campos, the Latin American director for Crime Stoppers, warned that failing to regulate these assets effectively hands the ecosystem over to criminals.

Campos noted that the expansion of digital ecosystems has made tracking financial flows significantly more complex. He emphasized that law enforcement must shift from a traditional ‘follow the money’ approach to a ‘follow the data’ strategy. Because significant wealth can now be held in digital wallets or mobile devices rather than physical cash, investigators require strengthened laws, specialized knowledge, and advanced technology to effectively combat organized crime.
