Crime trends vary in Colombia as Valledupar reports declines while Atlántico sees rising homicides

Security trends in Colombia show contrasting results across different regions during 2026. In Valledupar, authorities reported a decrease in several crime categories. Theft fell by 4%, while domestic violence dropped by 34% and sexual offenses decreased by 31%. Personal injuries also saw a 27% reduction, and fatal road accidents declined by 21%. Additionally, law enforcement reported significant drug seizures, including over 6,300 kilograms of cocaine and 7,100 kilograms of coca base.

Conversely, the department of Atlántico and the city of Barranquilla are facing a surge in lethal violence. Between January and August 2026, 887 homicides were recorded in the department. In August alone, 112 murders occurred, with 107 of those concentrated in Barranquilla and its metropolitan area. Barranquilla recorded 56 murders and Soledad recorded 39 during August. The homicide rate in the metropolitan area for August represents a 42.7% increase compared to August 2025.
