Río Grande and Uruguay address road safety and rising homicide rates
In Río Grande, Argentina, authorities and cyclists are debating road safety measures following the death of Mariano Coronel. The City Council held an interdisciplinary meeting involving municipal, provincial, and national agencies, including the National Commission for the Regulation of Transport (CNRT). Discussions focused on jurisdictional boundaries, the need for better driver education, and improving coexistence between cyclists and motorists. The municipality presented its agenda, which includes urban monitoring via cameras and mandatory driving courses for approximately 2,000 residents per month.
In Uruguay, Interior Minister Carlos Negro reported a 6% increase in homicides during the first half of 2026. In response, the government is implementing institutional changes, increasing patrols, and utilizing new technologies. A decree regarding firearm control has also been proposed to address illegal weapon possession, which is linked to organized crime. While September saw a nearly 30% drop in homicides, officials are waiting for longer-term data to evaluate the impact of these security measures.
