Crimea experiences widespread power and internet outages after substation attack

A major power outage hit the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula following an attack on a critical electrical substation in Russia's Krasnodar region. The Taman substation, which serves as a vital energy link between mainland Russia and Crimea via the Kerch Strait, was reportedly damaged during the night of October 24.

Large cities including Sevastopol, Simferopol, Yalta, Alushta, and Feodosiya experienced electricity losses. Satellite data from NASA’s FIRMS system indicated thermal anomalies at the Taman site, suggesting damage. NetBlocks also reported significant internet connectivity disruptions across the peninsula.

While the Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, acknowledged temporary outages due to attacks on infrastructure outside the city, local reports indicated that power was restored and then lost again in several locations. Additionally, drone strikes were reported in Russia's Rostov region, affecting a transformer station and leaving approximately 130 households without power.
