Criminal convictions issued in Ecuador and Peru for extortion and robbery

In separate legal developments in Ecuador and Peru, individuals have received prison sentences for violent and predatory crimes.

In Cuenca, Ecuador, brothers José Armando R. and Carlos Abraham R. were sentenced to six years and eight months in prison for extorting a restaurant owner. The victim received WhatsApp messages demanding $5,000 under threat of violence against his family and business. Following investigations by the Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (Unase), authorities traced bank deposits made to an account in Guayaquil. Digital forensics on the suspects' mobile phones provided decisive evidence of the extortion attempts.

In Huánuco, Peru, Alán Guerra Córdova was sentenced to over eight years in prison for an attempted aggravated robbery that occurred twelve years ago in Amarilis. The incident, dating back to 2014, involved an attempt to steal a Toyota Corolla. Despite the significant delay since the crime, Guerra Córdova accepted the charges following a conclusion of the judicial process. He is currently held at the Potracancha prison.
