UK schools targeted by criminal gangs using AI deepfakes for blackmail

A report by the AI safeguarding firm Aidos, titled ‘In Plain Sight’, reveals that nearly half of UK headteachers (49%) have experienced incidents where pupil images were misused, manipulated, or used for extortion and blackmail.

Criminal gangs are reportedly scraping photos from school websites and social media to create hyper-realistic AI-generated deepfakes. These images are then used to target school leaders and trustees with ransom demands. Experts warn that criminals exploit the tendency of school administrators to prioritize protecting their institution's reputation, which may lead to incidents being handled privately rather than reported to authorities.

The scale of the threat is reflected in data from the Internet Watch Foundation, which noted a significant rise in AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The foundation identified over 8,000 such images and videos last year, with AI-generated video cases jumping from 13 in 2024 to 3,443 in 2025.

Beyond the direct attacks, the survey found that 54% of headteachers are concerned about the vulnerability of published school images to AI misuse, and 45% have received direct complaints from parents regarding the potential or actual misuse of their children's images online.
