Criminal leader 'La Wiwa' arrested in San Luis Potosí

Authorities in San Luis Potosí have arrested Juan de Jesús Salazar, known as 'La Wiwa', a 35-year-old suspected criminal leader operating in the Huasteca Potosina region. Salazar, who is reportedly originally from Veracruz, was apprehended in the Arboledas de Jacarandas neighborhood and faces charges of qualified homicide.

Investigations suggest Salazar maintained a business profile to mask his activities. Intelligence reports indicate that recent violent clashes in Tanquián de Escobedo were driven by internal conflicts and power struggles within the criminal cell, involving both local members and individuals arriving from Veracruz.

Publicly available photographs have linked Salazar to businessman Gerardo Sánchez Zumaya, a former gubernatorial aspirant. The images show the two attending social events, including a wedding in Monterrey in April 2024. While the connection has drawn significant media attention, authorities have not officially established a criminal link between Sánchez Zumaya and Salazar.
