Doctor Jesús Maximiano Verduzco linked to process for eight deaths in Sonora

A judge in Hermosillo, Sonora, has formally linked doctor Jesús Maximiano Verduzco Soto to a criminal process for involuntary manslaughter (homicidio culposo). The charges stem from the administration of vitamin serums that resulted in the deaths of eight people and caused health complications for an additional 12 patients.

Authorities are investigating potential bacterial contamination in the intravenous solutions, which were reportedly marketed as treatments for conditions such as cancer and kidney stones. The investigation seeks to determine the exact composition of the substances and the circumstances of their administration.

Verduzco Soto, who surrendered to authorities following a reward offer, will remain in preventive detention at the Hermosillo Social Readaptation Center (Cereso 1). The court has established a three-month period for complementary investigation, allowing both the prosecution and the defense to present further evidence. If convicted, the doctor could face a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 12 years.
