Criminal statistics show varying trends in German states
Recent data from German state statistical offices reveal differing trends in criminal justice. In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of legally convicted persons decreased slightly in 2025 to 15,883, down 258 from the previous year. Theft and embezzlement were the most frequent non-traffic offenses, accounting for 2,681 convictions. Traffic offenses represented 27.5 percent of all convictions, with a lower rate of prior convictions (32.8 percent) compared to other criminal offenses (51 percent).
In contrast, Rhineland-Palatinate reported an increase in the prison population. As of March 31, approximately 3,150 inmates were held in state correctional facilities, a 2.8 percent increase of about 100 people compared to 2025. The majority of inmates, roughly 78 percent, were serving sentences following final convictions. Property and asset crimes, including robbery, theft, and fraud, were the most common reasons for incarceration, involving over 900 individuals.
