Matamoros: Criminal leader arrest triggers violence and road blockades

Mexican federal forces, including Army Special Forces and the National Guard, arrested Axel Alfredo “N”, identified as the second-in-command of the “Los Ciclones” faction of the Gulf Cartel, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. The operation, conducted through military intelligence, also resulted in the seizure of weapons, drugs, and a vehicle. The arrest of the individual, who is reportedly the son of José Alfredo Cárdenas Martínez, alias “El Contador”, led to immediate violent retaliation by criminal groups.

Criminal organizations orchestrated widespread “narcobloqueos” (roadblocks) across Matamoros and Río Bravo, using hijacked cargo trucks, public transport buses, and burned vehicles to obstruct major avenues and highways. In some areas, spike strips were deployed to prevent the movement of authorities. The violence caused significant disruptions to the Reynosa-Matamoros commercial corridor and led to the temporary closure of the Los Indios and Los Veteranos international bridges at the Texas border.

The unrest resulted in several casualties, including the reported death of a young girl in the Las Rusias sector and a fatal vehicle collision involving four people who struck a burned bus used in a blockade. Educational authorities suspended afternoon classes in Matamoros as a precaution. The U.S. Consulate in Matamoros issued an urgent security alert, advising citizens to shelter in place.
