Cristian Gonzalo V. L. transferred to Cárcel del Encuentro

Authorities in Ecuador have transferred Cristian Gonzalo V. L. to the new Cárcel del Encuentro, a maximum-security facility. He is the sole individual currently being prosecuted in connection with the disappearance and death of 28-year-old Lizeth Bunshi.

Ms. Bunshi disappeared on July 19 after traveling to the Valle de los Chillos to meet her partner and friends. Following a 37-day search, her body was discovered on August 25 in the Machángara River near Guápulo. Forensic dental analysis and an autopsy confirmed her identity and determined that drowning was the cause of death.

The prosecution is investigating Cristian V. L. for alleged involuntary disappearance. Investigators noted multiple contradictions in his testimony; while he initially claimed Ms. Bunshi fell into the river accidentally, witnesses reported hearing a heated argument involving death threats and cries for help prior to her disappearance.
