Cristian Mungiu's Fjord screens at São Paulo International Film Festival

The film “Fjord,” directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, is featured at the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival. Mungiu, a former Palme d'Or winner, presents a controversial narrative centered on a Romanian man, Mihai Gheorghiu, who moves to a small town in Norway with his Norwegian wife and five children.

The plot follows a teacher who discovers bruises on one of the children and triggers a child protection investigation. This leads to the children, including an infant, being placed in foster care while legal and social processes are completed. The film is described as a critique of the Norwegian and broader European welfare state, portraying a system that the director views as xenophobic and anti-religious.
