Cristian Mungiu’s ‘Fjord’ wins Palme d’Or

Cristian Mungiu’s new film, ‘Fjord’, has won the Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, the film has been designated by Romania as its official candidate for the 2027 Oscars for Best International Feature Film.

Set in a remote Norwegian fjord, the story follows the Gheorghiu family, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who move to a small village. The narrative explores tensions between faith, authority, and individual freedom when the family’s traditional upbringing is questioned by the local community and child protection services following the discovery of bruises on their teenage daughter.

The film is scheduled for a preview at the Rome Film Fest and will be released in cinemas on November 19 via Bim Distribuzione.
