Cristian Mungiu's Palme d’Or winner 'Fjord' explores cultural polarization

Director Cristian Mungiu has returned to festival prominence with his latest film, ‘Fjord’, which won the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The 146-minute family drama stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a Romanian-Norwegian couple whose lives are upended when local authorities remove their five children due to child-rearing suspicions.

A European co-production, the film features a multilingual screenplay including Norwegian, Romanian, Swedish, and English. Production took place across several countries, with filming in Norway, editing in Romania, sound design in Finland, and mixing in Denmark.

Mungiu describes the film as an exploration of political echo chambers and the dangers of a polarized society. Through the lens of a legal battle triggered by a school teacher's observation, the narrative examines the friction between traditional religious values and progressive environments.
