Cristian Zamora faces corruption probe in Cuenca

An investigation into alleged corruption within the Cuenca Municipality has targeted suspended Mayor Cristian Zamora. Official reports suggest a structure may have operated to benefit Zamora, with allegations that he received approximately USD 1.3 million from the Consorcio Cuatro Ríos.

The controversy involves three hospital contracts in El Valle, Baños, and Ricaurte. The Secretariat General of Public Integrity is reviewing these processes due to suspected commercial links between the winning consortia and companies associated with Zamora’s family.

Zamora has denied all allegations, characterizing the investigation as political persecution. He clarified that his parents' hardware store, Megacero, sells only to metalworking workshops and has never sold to municipal contractors. He also denied ownership or partnership in companies such as Alohaholding, Ismovid, and La Rioja.

Currently in Mexico for stated medical reasons, Zamora faces an ongoing investigation by the Prosecutor's Office for alleged illicit enrichment. Following previous raids on his properties and office, authorities have reportedly sought his location, with some reports suggesting a request for an Interpol alert.
