Cristian Zamora travels to Mexico amid illicit enrichment probe

Cristian Zamora, the suspended mayor of Cuenca, Ecuador, has traveled to Mexico for medical treatment amid an investigation by the State Prosecutor's Office for alleged illicit enrichment.

Zamora confirmed his presence in Mexico via social media, stating he is seeking specialized treatment for a digestive health issue. He denied allegations of fleeing, noting he has no travel restrictions and chose Mexico due to his previous residency there for studies. Regarding the investigation, Zamora addressed a Comptroller General report, arguing that out of over 7.6 million dollars audited, only approximately 82,398 dollars lacked immediate justification, much of which he claims relates to transactions made before his term.

Azuay Governor Xavier Bermúdez has criticized the situation, expressing regret that Cuenca has an investigated mayor and questioning the timing of Zamora's departure. Bermúdez also raised concerns regarding alleged nepotism within the municipal administration. The State Prosecutor's Office has requested a court date to formally charge Zamora, maintaining that there is sufficient evidence for the investigation.
