Universitatea Craiova wins Romanian Supercup on penalties

On 12 July 2026 the Romanian Supercup was contested at the Ion Oblemenco stadium in Craiova between league champions Universitatea Craiova and cup runners‑up Universitatea Cluj. The match ended 1‑1 after regular time, with Steven Nsimba scoring for Craiova in the 40th minute and Alibek Aliev equalising for Cluj in the 53rd minute after a VAR review. No extra time was played and the contest proceeded directly to a penalty shoot‑out. Universitatea Craiova converted all five of their attempts, while Cluj missed one, giving the Oltenians a 5‑3 victory.

Coach Filipe Coelho described the result as “deserved”, emphasizing that penalties are a matter of training, not luck. Former players and officials, including Ovidiu Bic and Cristiano Bergodi, praised the team’s performance and highlighted the tactical preparation for the shoot‑out. The win completes a domestic “triple” for Craiova, who also captured the league title and Romanian Cup earlier in the season.

Following the triumph, the club’s president announced that new investors are expected to inject several million euros, and the team now turns its focus to the Champions League qualifying round against Vitebsk.
