Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Luka Modric are among a select group of 66 footballers to surpass 1,000 career appearances. Ronaldo ranks third on this list with 1,343 appearances, making him the highest-ranked outfield player. Messi follows in sixth place with 1,215 appearances, while Modric holds ninth place with 1,178.

In terms of single-year scoring efficiency, Lionel Messi holds the all-time record for most goals in a calendar year, having scored 91 goals in 2012. Other notable high-scoring years include Gerd Müller’s 85 goals in 1972, Cristiano Ronaldo’s 69 goals in 2013, and Robert Lewandowski’s 69 goals in 2021.

Ronaldo’s career has also been marked by high-profile tensions with management. More recently, Ronaldo reportedly had a dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus after being benched during the UEFA Nations League.
