Cristiano Ronaldo sets World Cup scoring record as Rio Ferdinand defends his performance

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand praised Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese star opened scoring in the 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Uzbekistan in Houston. Ronaldo's ninth‑minute goal made him the oldest scorer for Portugal at a World Cup, surpassing Pepe, and he became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments.

Ferdinand also criticised opponents of Ronaldo, saying the striker should be substituted around the 70‑minute mark in games that are already decided and highlighting the importance of clear communication with a player of his temperament.
