Cristiano Ronaldo's Future with Portugal Under New Coach Jorge Jesus

The Portuguese Football Federation is urging Cristiano Ronaldo to postpone retirement, fearing the loss of the star’s global visibility and commercial value for the national team. At 41, Ronaldo remains active, having helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League, and he is the all‑time leading scorer in men’s international football.

Jorge Jesus, appointed as Portugal’s head coach after Roberto Martinez’s departure, says he will keep most of the current squad but does not guarantee Ronaldo a regular starting role. Former Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira noted that Ronaldo may have to accept a reduced role as the new manager shapes the team. Ronaldo scored three goals at the 2026 World Cup, where Portugal exited in the round of 16 after a stoppage‑time loss to Spain.
