Cristina Sánchez López joins the Royal Spanish Academy

Philologist Cristina Sánchez López has been formally inducted as a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), occupying seat 'p'. The position had been vacant since the death of Francisco Rico Manrique on April 27, 2024.

During the induction ceremony in Madrid, presided over by RAE Director Santiago Muñoz Machado, Sánchez López delivered an inaugural address titled ‘Language Cartographies: A Venturous Journey through Spanish Grammar’. In her speech, she compared the work of grammarians to that of cartographers, describing grammar as a cognitive system used intuitively by speakers to express thoughts, attitudes, and feelings.

Sánchez López, a professor at the Complutense University, is a specialist in syntax. Her candidacy was supported by Ignacio Bosque, Miguel Sáenz, and Paloma Díaz-Mas.
