Laboratório Cristália develops experimental anti-smoking vaccine

Laboratório Cristália has announced initial research results for a Brazilian-developed vaccine aimed at treating nicotine addiction. The project is currently in the ‘Early Discovery’ phase and has undergone testing in animal models.

Unlike existing treatments that focus on managing withdrawal symptoms, this vaccine seeks to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies that capture nicotine in the bloodstream. By binding to the nicotine molecule, the resulting complex becomes too large to cross the blood-brain barrier, preventing the substance from reaching the brain and triggering the dopamine release associated with addiction.

While the pre-clinical studies demonstrated the ability to induce specific antibodies and impede addiction signals in experimental models, the vaccine has not yet been registered with Anvisa. Further research is required to determine human dosage, scheduling, and safety protocols.
