Cristo Redentor border crossing stays shut, stranding trucks between Chile and Argentina

The Cristo Redentor (Los Libertadores) border complex remains completely closed, now 18 days without traffic, because meters‑high snow has piled up in the high Andes. The Confederación Nacional de Dueños de Camiones de Chile (CNDC) warned that the situation for trucks heading to Argentina is “complex”, with ongoing avalanche and rolling‑snow risks and no date set for reopening.

Road agencies of Chile and Argentina are working to clear the road, but hazardous conditions persist. Congestion has shifted to other passes – traffic at Pino Hachado has roughly doubled and the Cardenal Samoré crossing stays suspended. The CNDC noted that the costly alternative via the Jama crossing in Chile’s second region should be used only after careful evaluation.
