Cristo Redentor Pass reopens after 34-day closure

The Cristo Redentor International Pass, a vital link between Argentina and Chile, is undergoing a progressive reopening following a historic 34-day closure caused by extreme snow and winter weather.

The reopening is being implemented in stages to manage the massive backlog of vehicles. Initially, the pass is restricted exclusively to land cargo transport. From August 18 to August 20, cargo trucks are permitted to travel from Argentina to Chile between 09:00 and 21:00. The flow will then reverse from August 21 to August 22, allowing trucks to travel from Chile to Argentina during the same hours.

Authorities have stated that priority will be given to trucks that are already documented and parked in the Uspallata parking lot. To ensure safety and prioritize logistics, tourism—including private vehicles and buses—remains suspended. Officials will communicate future schedules for passenger transit once conditions allow.

The prolonged closure has had significant economic impacts, with some estimates suggesting losses of approximately US$ 200 million. While the reopening provides relief to the logistics sector and helps decompress alternative routes like Pino Hachado and Cardenal Samoré, exporters remain cautious regarding the time required to fully normalize trade flows.
